EPR Regulation
On 5 November 2020, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) gazetted the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations, establishing compliance requirements for several sectors, including Paper and Packaging, Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE), and Lighting.
These regulations were formally implemented on 5 May 2021 under Section 18 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA), 2008 (Act 59 of 2008).
The EPR framework ensures that producers remain responsible for the collection, recycling, and proper disposal of their packaging and related materials in an environmentally compliant and economically sustainable manner.
